Cork Oak              KWER-kus SOO-ber

• Broadleaf evergreen tree, 70-100 ft (21-30 m) high, equal spread, short trunk, round crown, thick branches.  Trunk and main limbs covered with thick, corky bark; the cork of commerce, which is removed every 6-8 years.  Leaves alternate, simple, ovate to oval-oblong, 3-7 cm long, acute tip, base rounded to somewhat cordate, margin has 4-5 short teeth on each side, upper suface shiny green, white-gray tomentose below; petiole 8-15 mm long.  Fruit (acorn) 1.5-3 cm long, ovoid-oblong, cap cup-shaped, short stalked.
• Sun.  Prefers good drainage, tolerant of different soil types. Established trees drought resistant.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 7      Native to the Mediterranean region.
• Oregon State Univ. campus: along Park Terrace, the extension of 25th St. into the campus.
