• Deciduous shrub or shrubby tree, most often less than 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8 m) tall, usually with contorted and twisted branches.  Leaf shape, bark color and pattern, and acorns are similar to those of the common tree form.  However, its buds are generally small, rounded and reddish, while those of the more common tree form are more elongate and yellowish to cream in color (H. Chambers, Oregon Flora Project).
• It occurs at 1400-1900 m in elevation in the Siskiyou region of northern California and southern Oregon.
