Krauter's Vesuvius Flowering Plum, Krauter's Vesuvius Plum, also Krauter Vesuvius    PROO-nus ser-as-IF-er-a

• Deciduous tree, small, 15-20 ft (4.5-6 m), similar width, upright, similar to 'Thundercloud' in appearance.  Flowers light pink, dark purplish foliage.
• Sun.  Any average soil, well-drained. Prune after flowering to keep trees vigorous.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 5
  This cultivar was introduced by Carl Krauter, Bakersfield, California in the 1950s.  Appears to be suited for drier, hotter sites and is now the most common purple leaf plum in the southwestern U.S.  Similar in appearance to 'Thundercloud', but smaller and more upright, and its young leaves are darker red and less bronzy than 'Thundercloud' (Jacobson, 1996).
