Philadelphus Buckley's Quill Hydrangeaceae (Philadelphaceae)
Buckley's Quill Mockorange fil-a-DEL-fus
- Deciduous shrub, erect, compact, 5 ft tall, 4 ft wide (1.5 × 1.2 m). Leaves opposite, simple, ovate, 5 cm long, 3.5 cm wide, yellow-green, pubescent, margin dentate. Flowers white, fragrant, double, 3.5 cm across with about 30 quill-like (pointed) petals (2 cm × 0.8 cm), borne in compact clusters; blooms abundantly in late spring.
- Sun to part shade. Adaptable.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 4 Developed at Agricultural Canada's Ottawa Research Station; the result of a 1959 cross of Philadelphus × lemoinei 'Frosty Morn' with the P. × cymosus 'Bouquet Blanc', it was selected in 1961 (Svejda, F. 1979. Can. J. Plant Sci. 59:879-882). As a hybrid, it is sometimes presented, correctly, as Philadelphus × Buckley's Quill.
