Magnolia stellata Waterlily
Magnoliaceae
Waterlily Magnolia
mag-NO-li-a ste-LAH-ta
- Broadleaf deciduous large, rounded shrub, 10-20 ft (3-6 m) high, similar width, often branching close to
the ground, but it can be trained into a small tree. Flower buds are pinkish and the white flowers,
flushed with pink, have double the number of petals (tepals) than does the wild type, fragrant, blooms 1-2
weeks later than typical star magnolias.
- Hardy to USDA Zone 5 Reportedly three different clones of star magnolia are grown under
this name, but the most widely available originated from Norfolk, Virginia (Treseder, N. Magnolias
1978). There is also British 'Water Lily' (two words) which lacks any trace of pink in its flowers.
- Corvallis: east side of parking lot on the east side of Corvallis High School.
