- Broadleaf deciduous shrub, broad-spreading, to 6-10 ft (1.8-3 m) tall and 8-10 ft (2.5-3 m) wide. Leaves alternate, simple, cordate base (leaf shape resembles the leaves of Redbud (Cercis), hence the specific epithet, cercidifolius), to 10 cm, blue-green; fall color claret red and purple. Flowers small, bisexual, 5 spreading petals, dark purple, about 1 cm across, paired back to back. Fruit obovoid, a capsule, 2-lobed, contains several glossy black seeds.
- Partial shade, acid soil, protect from wind. Reportedly not easy to establish. (May not be able to enjoy its fall color if deer get to it first!)
