Spike Winterhazel kor-i-LOP-sis spi-KAH-ta
- Deciduous shrub, multistemmed, wide spreading, 4-6(10) ft [1.2-1.8(3) m] tall with a greater width. Leaves alternate, simple, 5-10 cm long, rounded (orbicular-ovate to orbicular-obovate), tip abruptly acuminate, base cordate (heart-shaped) to rounded, margin with bristle-like teeth, new growth purplish, later dull green to blue green, 6-8 vein pairs; petiole 1.3-2.5 cm long, woolly. Flowers appear before leaves, fragrant, soft yellow, in pendulous, 2.5-5 cm long, clusters (racemes), 6-12 flowers per cluster, stamens with pink filaments, and anthers brown, purple or red.
