- Broadleaf deciduous shrub, multistemmed, spreading, 4-6(10) ft [1.2-1.8(3) m] tall with a greater width. Flowers appear before leaves, fragrant, pale yellow, about 1 cm long, from 3-5 flowers per hanging cluster (raceme), only 2.5-5 cm long. Leaves alternate, simple, 3-7 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, ovate to broad ovate, tip acute, base obliquely cordate (heart-shaped) to sub-cordate, margin with bristle-like teeth, glabrous (without hairs) and bright green above, silky hairs on veins below; petiole 0.8-2 cm long, slender.
