- Broadleaf deciduous shrub or small tree, to 30 ft (9 m), often multi-stemmed, branches pendulous, twigs dark-maroon brown. Leaves alternate, simple, broadly ovate, to 5 cm, lustrous green and below (burgundy color in fall), veins in 10-12 pairs, not impressed above, hairy beneath. Male and female flowers in separate clusters (catkins) on the same tree. Fruit catkin slender stalked, 5-6 cm long, composed of overlapping bracts, each about 2 cm long.
