- Evergreen shrub, to 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8 m) tall, arching branches, twigs yellowish and glabrous, 3-parted spines (thorns) to 1.5 cm. Leaves alternate, simple, narrow lanceolate, 2-4 cm long, wavy, serrate on apical portion, margin turned under (revolute), dull, dark green above and gray-white below, new growth reddish. Flowers pale yellow, about 10 per cluster; blooms in late spring. Fruit oblong, to 1 cm, red then ripening to purple-black (fall).
