Shadblow, Shadblow Serviceberry, Thicket Serviceberry   am-e-LANG-kee-er kan-a-DEN-sis

• Deciduous shrub, to 15 ft (4.5 m) tall, slightly less spread, erect branches, suckers at base.  Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic to oblong, 3-8 cm long, about 1-3 cm wide, rounded, occasionally cordate at base, sharply serrate nearly to the base, when young, pubescent above and (less) below, medium to dark green; fall color yellow and gold to orange and red.  Flowers small, white, in 5-8 cm long erect clusters (racemes).  Fruit about 6 mm, rounded, maroon-purple to black, sweet, juicy.
• Sun or part shade and ordinary garden soil.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 3, but possibly 2 (Snyder, 2000).      Native range from Maine to Georgia, Louisiana and west to Iowa and Missouri.
