• Broadleaf deciduous shrub or tree, 10-20(35) ft (3-6(11) m) tall with a similar width, clump forming, rounded crown, irregular.  Leaves opposite, pinnately compound, 5-7 leaflets, each 7-15 cm long and 3-10 cm wide, acuminate, irregularly and sometimes doubly serrate, dark green, without hairs (glabrous) or pubescent below, petiole 5-13 cm long.  Flowers red, 3-4 cm long, 4-5 petals, in clusters 10-20 cm long, about 5 or more cm wide.  Fruit spherical or ovoid, 3-5 cm wide, smooth surface, 1-2 brown glossy seeds.
• Sun or light shade, in well-drained, acid soil.
• Hardy to USDA Zone 5     Native range extends from Virginia to Florida and east to Loisiana and Texas.
