The Oregon State University Klamath County Master Gardener Program has been actively training and supporting master gardener volunteers since 1993. Each March master gardener candidates are given training in basic soil and plant science topics to augment their own horticultural background. Each successful MG candidate is expected to give volunteer time equal to the hours of training they receive - typically this is 42 hours of training. Master gardeners work in the MG office answering home horticultural questions over the phone and in person walk-ins. Each year veteran MGs and new MGs provide over 3,000 volunteer hours equal to 1 FTE (full-time equivalent) worth $28,000 to the Klamath Basin Community. Master gardener volunteers also work on various horticultural projects of their choice to fulfill their volunteer commitment. Each summer MGs are encourage to attend the Oregon State University Mini-College a three-day event designed to provide educational workshops, tours and social functions geared to the home gardener. There is also an active local Klamath County Chapter of the Oregon Master Gardener Association. Members of the chapter work to support OSU Extension Master Gardener Program through many local projects.
