The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program at Oregon State University and Portland State University focused on life below the Earth's surface, "The Subsurface Biosphere"

This program was designed for graduate students who were interested in combining the disciplines of Engineering, Oceanography, Microbiology, Chemistry, Geology and Agriculture.

Students worked in two or more disciplines to discover:

  • How to solve environmental problems
  • How to improve our groundwater, soil and crops
  • How to determine the amount and diversity of microbes in hydrothermal vents, subsurface rocks and sediment
  • The relationship of microbes to the production of natural gas and economic minerals
  • How to understand how global chemical cycles are affected by microbes.

Please note: Our program has come to an end and this site will be taken down within the next few months.
