Oregon State University is pleased to announce the availability of undergraduate research opportunities in the biological sciences to students who have completed their freshman, sophomore, or junior years of college by June of each school year. Sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), these fellowships give undergraduates unique research opportunities with OSU researchers. No previous research experience is required of students in the program, but each applicant must be sponsored by an Oregon State University faculty member in the biological sciences. Students who wish to participate and haven't identified a sponsoring faculty member should contact Kevin Ahern at the phone number or email address below as soon as possible. The program is open to OSU students and to students at other universities/colleges. Students from institutions other than Oregon State University who wish to apply should contact Kevin Ahern prior to applying to obtain full instructions. Fellowships pay $3800 for 11 weeks of full time research (in 2007) in a sponsoring laboratory, followed by student participation in an end-of-the-summer symposium.
The application consists of two documents - one prepared by the student applicant and one prepared by the mentor. Applications are made available in January of each year and are due in early March. Questions should be addressed to Kevin Ahern at 541-737-2305 or ahernk@onid.orst.edu. Awards will be announced in early April. We welcome a diverse group of student participants - students new to research, as well as those with previous experience. Students who have completed their freshman year are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed 1, 2, or 3 years of university or college training with a research plan appropriate to the student's level of experience. Students who have applied for other research support (such as OSU's URISC program) at any time in their academic careers will be given preference over students with no such applications. Students must note these applications/awards in their application in order to receive credit for them
In order for participants to benefit most from the program, they should be at least one academic year away from graduation. We welcome applications from individuals who previously have received award(s) in our HHMI program, but to stretch resources as far as possible, we request that mentors sponsoring students for a second or third consecutive summer in the program help us to identify supplemental funding, whenever possible. We also welcome students whose sponsoring mentor can provide support in the program using funds from sources other than the HHMI grant, such as NSF REU supplements. Please contact Kevin for more information.
