DeLoach Work Scholarship

The program enables OSU faculty members to support undergraduates working at tasks that materially enhance their academic training and that support the instructional, curricular, outreach, or diversity goals of the university. Dr. & Mrs. Daniel Barton DeLoach endowed the DeLoach Work Scholarship Fund with generous gifts and bequests between 1977 and 1988. Dr. DeLoach was an Oregon State faculty member from 1935 to 1949.

Eligibility

OSU tenured/tenure-track faculty and Senior Instructors are invited to initiate proposals on behalf of named undergraduate students. All University Honors College undergraduates are eligible to participate. Students must be enrolled full-time during the term of work. Contact the UHC (7-6400) for information.

Use of Funds

Funded activities include tutoring, curriculum development, community outreach, and promotion of diversity. Undergraduate research, either individually or as part of a team, is not funded by the DeLoach Work Scholarship Program. Scholarship payments will be determined based on hours of work, up to a maximum of 10 hours per week, and paid monthly at a rate of $9.00 per hour through the University Honors College, up to a maximum of $900 per funded application. Students submit monthly timesheets, signed by the faculty supervisor, to the UHC office.

Application

Applications are to be initiated by OSU faculty of professorial or Senior Instructor rank on behalf of specific students. A complete application includes:

A one-page letter from the faculty supervisor naming the student recipient. The letter should include:

  • A reasonably detailed description of the specific work assignment;
    • An indication of how the project supports the instructional, curricular, outreach, or diversity goals of the university;
    • An estimate of total hours to be worked and a plan for supervision.
    • Department Chair/Head approval is required.
  • A one-page letter from the student describing how the work enhances their academic experience. The student letter can also address financial need. Please include student ID# and complete contact information.

Submit application letters to Rebekah Lancelin at the address given below.

Deadlines

A Request for Proposals goes out to eligible faculty during the sixth week of each fall, winter, and spring academic term. Proposals are due on the Wednesday of Dead Week for projects scheduled to begin during the following winter, spring, or fall terms, respectively.

Review

The University Honors College reviews all proposals and makes award decisions based on available funds according to the following criteria. Work assignments must relate to the student’s academic training. Tasks related to undergraduate instructional programs are encouraged. First-time awardees receive higher priority. Expected impact of the proposed work on the University Honors College, its students, and supporting programs will be considered.

Training & Reporting

A mandatory ethics training session for DeLoach Scholars occurs at the beginning of each term.

Student awardees are required to submit a one-page report at the end of each term of work. The report should contain a summary of activities and an assessment of the impact of those activities on the student’s academic program.
