Essay Questions

OSU and the University Honors College seek students with a diversity of interests and perspectives who possess the capacity and motivation to excel. Essays are an important part of your UHC application and should represent your polished writing. Answer each question succinctly, but with enough detail for the selection committee to get a better sense of your competencies (250 words per question). Both essay questions must be answered

1) Music runs through all of our lives, infusing our experience with unique shades of meaning and feeling. Whether it’s a piece of music that seems to speak directly to you or a song that will always conjure up a specific time, place, or mood, music can define moments and help us define ourselves. For this essay, select an important musical experience – a song, musical piece, or performance – in your life, and explain what it says about who you are or aspire to become.

2) Select a news story or column that captures your attention from any electronic or print source you read regularly. Identify the source and the date the story appeared. Then explain what about the article inspired your choice: Did it speak to your values or interests? Was it especially well written (funny, inspiring, or sad)? Do you hope to engage with the story’s topic in the future?

AP, IB or College Courses

List any AP/IB or college courses taken while still in high school. List courses you have taken and those you plan to take before graduating from high school. Provide the scores you received if applicable.

Insight Resume

The UHC will read and review your OSU insight resume as part of the UHC application process. You do not need to provide an additional copy of the Insight resume to the UHC.

UHC Scholarships

First Year Applicants

All First year admitted students are considered for UHC scholarships. However, we ask that you answer the questions listed below so that we can best match students to our scholarships.

Current OSU and Transfer Applicants

Current OSU and transfer applicants will have the opportunity to apply for UHC scholarships if admitted. Applications for UHC tuition scholarships are available April 1st - June 1st.

Additional Materials

The UHC will review transcripts, test scores and Insight resumes as needed for each applicant. Test scores (SAT and/or ACT) and transcripts should be sent directly to general admissions at Oregon State University in a timely fashion as per instructions on the OSU application. You do not need to send a separate copy of your transcript or test scores to the UHC.
