I was born in Oregon, but my family has moved all over the west coast.
My family moved from Sacramento, CA to Bellingham, WA, right before the beginning of my Junior year of high school. Oregon State has been perfect for me because the distance from home gives me just the right amount of independence and room for personal growth, yet I don't need a plane ticket to go home for the holidays.
Unlike many students in their first year, I barely knew anyone when classes began in the fall of 2008. Since then, I joined the Equestrian Polo Club, Biochemistry & Biophysics Club, and Sigma Delta Omega, the women in science sorority. Being involved in clubs and student groups is an integral part of my college experience. It gives me the chance to give back to the community, take a break from concentrating on my studies, and lets me have fun with friends. The UHC also provides various opportunities to get my head out of the books, including a ski trip to Mt. Bachelor and a rafting trip in the spring!
One of the things I love about Oregon State is that it is full of academic opportunities. Having fewer classmates in the honors classes also enables me to make connections and learn more from others' perspectives. As an Honors College student, I get to register for classes earlier than my non-honors peers and am exposed to tons of research opportunities, jobs, and scholarships. My decision to enroll in the Honors College was based on my desire to be challenged by my peers and professors. UHC students are outstanding individuals, and I benefit from my decision to be a member of this community every day.
If you have any questions about what its like to be in the UHC or anything else, please feel free to email me at parkeche@onid.orst.edu!
