Dean's Note

I've just come back from Chicago, where I attended the first meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools' Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree advisory board. It's an exciting time to be involved with this project, which CGS calls "the most important new development in graduate education at the master's level." The new Graduate Student Conference
OSU's annual Graduate Student Conference is being reinvented this year. Traditionally, it has served as a general forum, where students could present their research in front of an audience of their peers and professors. This year, instead of student research, the conference will feature a variety of workshops on the practical skills students need to get into, through, and beyond graduate school.

Professional Science Master's Advisory Board
One of the most closely watched trends in graduate education today is the Professional Science Master's degree. It's a concept that can be applied to almost any science field to give a professional edge to master's degree recipients, so they'll be more marketable to non-academic employers. OSU Graduate School Dean Sally Francis recently accepted a seat on the newly established Council of Graduate Schools' PSM Advisory Board.
