Someone pointed out to me recently that this newsletter performs a role we never envisioned when we started publishing it a year and a half ago. It’s a great way to tell faraway friends and future students about what’s going on in OSU graduate programs. But it also serves those of us right here on campus, as confirmation that the graduate community really does continue to improve and evolve in significant ways over time.

New Programs


Geographic Information Science
More than a decade ago, in the early 1990s, OSU joined the pioneering institutions involved in the research, development, and teaching of digital technology for handling geographic information. Through a variety of technologies, it helps us represent that information in maps and images, and use those representations to understand how the Earth works.

Health Care Administration
OSU’s new Graduate Certificate in Health Care Administration offers health care managers the specialized business, insurance, and management training essential to their jobs. With a combination of online and intensive weekend courses, it gives students maximum flexibility to merge schoolwork with their busy lives.

New Water Resources Director

Mary Santelmann
Dr. Santelmann has a synergistic approach to her work, organizing conferences and developing research projects that bring together experts from across the scientific spectrum and from around the country. “I am an interdisciplinary person from as far back as my start in college. I’ve always had interests in both science and the humanities, and in both the biological sciences and the physical sciences.”

Sports Lottery Graduate Scholarship Recipients

This year, OSU was able to award 27 scholarships to exceptional students through the Oregon Sports Lottery Graduate Scholarship program. The three students we’ve profiled in this issue were awarded some of the largest Sports Lottery scholarships in the state. Congratulations to all the winners recipients!
