Graduate School Requirements

A student wishing to be admitted to any graduate program at Oregon State University must complete an application form, pay the application fee, and submit photocopies of all official transcripts. International students must also submit recent TOEFL scores and certify sufficient funding to complete the required degree. The Office of Admissions provides a more complete listing of required documents and application steps. Detailed information for both domestic applicants and international applicants is also available.

Applications to the Applied Economics Graduate Program must show evidence of probable success in graduate coursework and thesis completion. Transcripts will be reviewed to insure successful completion of program prerequisites.

Program Requirements

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Master's degrees (MA, MS) consist of intermediate-level courses in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, statistics, calculus, and linear algebra.

Prerequisites for the PhD degree consist of advanced undergraduate or graduate coursework in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics. Students who have completed all of the prerequisites for the Master's degree will be considered for admission directly to the PhD degree, but may be required to take some or all of the courses required for the OSU MA/MS degree.

GRE Scores

GRE scores must be submitted in addition to the information listed above.

TOEFL Score

International students are required to submit TOEFL score. The minimum TOEFL score is 575 (paper-based test), 90-91 (internet-based test) and 233 (computer-based test).

Reference Letters

Three letters of professional reference are required of all students, sealed in envelopes, addressed to "Director, Applied Economics Graduate Program." If you have a master's degree, you should include a letter from your major professor. Reference letters should be written on official letterhead.

Application Deadline

Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit completed applications by January 31 for admission in the following Fall quarter.

Graduate Assistantships

On the application form, applicants should indicate whether they wish to be considered for graduate teaching assistantships, graduate research assistantships or both. A limited number of assistantships are awarded each year by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Department of Economics, the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society, the Department of Engineering. Forest Resources and Management, and the Department of Public Health and possibly other sources. Applicants should indicate what types of assistantship support are of interest.
