APPLIED ECONOMICS GRADUATE PROGRAM

Applied Economics MA/MS Program Requirements

Core Courses

The core courses required of all MA and MS students are:

  • AEC 512 Microeconomic Theory I (4 credits)
  • AEC 513 Microeconomic Theory II (4 credits)
  • AEC 515 Macroeconomic Theory (4 credits)
  • AEC 523 Statistics and Optimization for Economics (4 credits)
  • AEC 525 Applied Econometrics (4 credits)

Areas of Concentration/Specialization

In addition to the core courses, MA/MS students are required to complete:

  • One area of concentration/specialization with a minimum of 6 credits.

Areas currently being offered by the Applied Economics program are:

  • Resource and Environmental Economics
  • Trade and Development
  • Transportation Economics
  • Public Health Economics
  • An open area of concentration or the Applied-Economics concentration provides Master's students the option of taking a concentration identified and approved by their Program Committee.

Students are required to obtain a B grade or above in each of the courses from the chosen concentration.

Resource and Environmental Economics

1. AREC 550 Environmental Economics (3 credits)
2. AREC 551 Natural Resource Economics (3 credits)
3. One of the following:
     a. FOR 537 Valuation of Non-market Resources (3 credits)
     b. FOR 534 Economics of Forest Resources (3 credits)

Trade and Development

1. AREC 543 Applied Trade Analysis (4 credits)
2. One of the following:
     a. ECON 555 Economic Development (3 credits)
     b. FOR 535 Markets and Prices in the Forest Sector (3 credits)
     c. AREC 643 International Trade II (4 credits)
     d. Another 500-level course approved by the Student's Committee

Transportation Economics

1. ECON 565 Transportation Economics (4 credits)
2. One of the following:
     a. AREC 550 Environmental Economics (3 credits)
     b. Another 500-level course approved by the Student's Committee

Public Health Economics

1. H 532 Economic Issues in Health and Medical Care (3 credits)
2. H 533 Health Systems Organization (3 credits)

Thesis/ Non-thesis options

Thesis or research-in-lieu-of thesis is required. Additional information on university requirements for the thesis is provided by the Graduate School in its guidelines for completing our thesis. Students who are in good standing in the OSU Applied Economics program may substitute an approved research project for the Master's thesis. All requirements for non-thesis Master's degrees set by the Graduate School must be satisfied.

Total Credits

Required Credits:    45
Core courses total 20 credits. Additionally, 6 or more credits from an area of concentration are required. A thesis option requires 6-12 (maximum 12) thesis credits, while a non-thesis option includes 3-6 research credits in lieu of thesis. Students will select additional credits for the Master's program of study totaling at least 45 credits.
