2008 CGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award - Mathematics, Physical Sciences & Engineering


We invite your program’s participation in OSU’s internal competition for the selection of our institutional nominee for the 2008 CGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering. This prestigious national competition is an important opportunity for OSU to showcase graduate student scholarship and creativity to institutions throughout the country and to celebrate our success. We urge you to take this opportunity to prepare a nomination.

OSU AWARDS AND RECOGNITION: Each nominee will receive a certificate of accomplishment from the Graduate School to recognize the nominee’s scholarly achievement. The Graduate School will provide a cash award of $1,000 to the student selected as OSU’s nominee for the Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering. The Graduate School also will award $1,000 to the graduate department/program that submits the dissertation selected as OSU’s nominee for the CGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award. If selected for the national award, the Graduate School will provide travel support to a maximum of $700 for the student’s major professor to attend the December 3-6 annual meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C.

PROCEDURES:  Each eligible graduate department/program may submit only one nomination for consideration. The effective date of the degree award, or the completion of doctoral degree requirements and dissertation must fall between the period of July 1, 2006 and June 30 2008, inclusive, for each nominee advanced for consideration. Departments/programs must submit three (3) copies of the abstract, the nomination form (attached), and the letters of reference to the Graduate School (see attachment announcement for complete details for required materials.) If selected, departments/programs must be prepared to provide an original and six (6) copies of these same materials no later than Monday, July 21, 2008.

NOMINATION DEADLINE: To facilitate the internal selection process, please submit all nomination materials to Mary Strickroth in the Graduate School (300 Kerr) by 5:00pm Wednesday, May 21, 2008.

The following list, although not all-inclusive, illustrates the fields considered as Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering:

mathematic, statistics, computer sciences, data processing, systems analysis, chemistry, earth sciences, physics, geology, meteorology, astronomy, metallurgy, geophysics, pharmaceutical chemistry; aeronautical, architectural, biomedical, ceramic, chemical, civil, and electrical engineering sciences; environmental health engineering; geological, mechanical, mining, nuclear, and petroleum engineering. (For purposes of this competition, engineering technologies are not included.)
