OREGON LAURELS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria for Graduate Student Nomination

2005-06

Oregon Laurels Graduate Scholarships

Eligibility:  Nominees must be first-year graduate students who are Oregon residents (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) and who have proven themselves to be academically talented.  Oregon residents will be given preference; however, in special cases, talented domestic nonresidents will be considered for receipt of an award.  Only graduate students new to a graduate degree program in Summer or Fall of 2005 will be considered for original Oregon Laurels Graduate Scholarships.  Recipients will be required to enroll for a minimum of 12 credits each term of the award. Audit registrations and enrollment in E-campus and other self-support programs will not count toward the 12-credit enrollment requirement.

Selection:  Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit as demonstrated by academic qualifications. Evaluation will be made from gpa on the last 90 hours of undergraduate work, gpa on courses taken after the first baccalaureate, letters of recommendation testifying to the student's academic ability, and gre or other standard test scores, when available.  Letters of recommendation may be those used for admission purposes.  Evaluation will be made by the Dean of the Graduate School.

Supplemental Oregon Laurels Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility:  Nominees may be resident or nonresident graduate students, domestic or international who have proven themselves to be academically talented.  New and continuing graduate students in degree programs will be considered for Supplemental Oregon Laurels Scholarships.

Evaluation will be made from gpa on the last 90 hours of undergraduate work, gpa on courses taken after the first baccalaureate, performance in current degree program (if nominee is a continuing student), letters of recommendation testifying to the student's academic ability, and gre or other standard test scores, when available.  Evaluation will be made by the Dean of the Graduate School.

Nominations:  Departments are asked to sort their nominees by the two award categories (i.e., Oregon Laurels and Supplemental Oregon Laurels), and, if more than one student is nominated, to rank them on the basis of academic qualifications within each award category.  Departments may submit no more than 10 nominations in each award category. Nominations should be submitted to the Graduate School no later than March 15, 2005.

Nominations should include a minimum of the following: a) nomination letter from the department head/chair or graduate program coordinator, b) two letters of recommendation.  In cases where the nominee's admission is still pending, please submit a complete copy of the graduate application and all accompanying transcripts.

Awards:  Awards will vary in amount depending upon a student's residency status.  Resident recipients will receive academic year tuition awards in the amount of resident graduate tuition.  Nonresident and international recipients will receive awards in the amount of the academic year nonresident graduate tuition differential. Recipients will be required to enroll for a minimum of 12 credits each term of the award. Summer session awards are not available.

1  Note: 2004-05 tuition rates have been utilized in this illustration; 2005-06 tuition rates are not yet available. All scholarship recipients will continue to be financially responsible for paying mandatory student fees, resource fees, overload charges for credits beyond 16 per term, and any tuition and fees associated with E-campus enrollment.

NOTE:  The Laurels awards are applied directly toward student tuition costs. Students on graduate assistantships are not eligible for Laurels funding since they receive tuition remission under their appointments.  Departments are encouraged to nominate underrepresented students of color and women admitted to a program in which such under-representation exists.
