Building Communities and Making Connections

The 37th annual meeting of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest will be held October 17-19, 2008 at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. The theme for the conference will be "Building Communities and Making Connections." Papers and panel discussions that demonstrate ways in which linguists contribute to the advancement of equity and democratic engagement are particularly encouraged. Please refer to the call for papers for more information.

James Crawford Photo In keeping with our theme, we are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for the 2008 meeting will be James Crawford, well-known expert on the politics of language. Crawford's presentation on the evening of October 18, 2008 will be held in Austin Auditorium in the LaSells Stewart Center and will be open to the entire campus community.

 

The Linguistic Association of the Southwest (LASSO) is a regional linguistics association in the United States whose purpose is the advancement of the scientific study of language, particularly in the geographical region covering the states of Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. While LASSO is primarily interested in languages of these southwestern states, it draws its membership from any region in the world. See the LASSO website for more information on the organization.
