International Opportunities

It is critical for the social and economic growth of the region that OSU students develop an international perspective. The department works closely with International Degree and Education Abroad to provide opportunities for our students to live and study abroad.

Students who have completed first-year university Spanish are eligible to apply to participate in the Chillán program.  The program allows students to complete the entire second-year sequence Spanish in a single term.   This program was especially designed to allow OSU students seeking a BA degree to satisfy the second language requirement and to have a study-abroad experience.  Chile, Chillán is a midsize town with a population of about 150,000 located in central Chile, about 5 hours south of Santiago.  The climate and topography of the area are similar to those of the Willamette Valley.  Many are attracted to Chillán because of the great outdoor opportunities that it offers such as skiing (season June - September), hot springs, and its many hiking possibilities.  This university town is also located about an hour from the coast.  The region is named after the Bío-Bío river that runs through it.

Quito

Quito, Ecuador program provides for six weeks of daily study at Escuela Politécnica del Ejército (ESPE) in Quito plus a voluntary experience. This program is especially designed for upper-division Spanish students seeking to satisfy course requirements for the major or minor.  Credits earned will be directly applied to OSU transcript. Courses will be taught by qualified instructors at the Ecuadorian university. Students are grouped by academic level in Spanish in small classes. Participants will live with host families while studying and will stay in approved hotels in Ecuador while traveling with the group.

Spain

For  this intensive language program, students receive 16 credits; 10 for language and 6 for Spanish culture upon successful completion of the course work. Students are enrolled at OSU and credits are granted though the Universidad de Cantabria and OSU. All classes are taught in Spanish and offer study in the areas of grammar, writing, oral skills, reading and culture. As part of the culture class, students will take four field trips.  Each participant should consult with his or her academic advisor to determine how the language and culture credits will integrate with the home campus curriculum requirements.  Classes meet Monday through Thursday. Short trips will be held during the week. Day-long field trips may be conducted during weekends.

Tunisia

Tunis is a capital city of approximately one million inhabitants and one of the cultural and economic centers of the Mediterranean Basin. Tunis and its surrounding area boast some of the finest archeological sites and ancient monuments in the Mediterranean world. Outstanding beaches and resorts, along with access to the Sahara in the South also make Tunisia a highly appealing destination for tourists, drawing over four million visitors a year.
