TOEFL iBT Tips or Treat

As many people know, TOEFL is a standardized test used to evaluate a candidate's skills to understand and use the English language in the English-speaking community and mostly at universities and colleges.
TOEFL iBT (Internet-based TOEFL), though it has a similar structure to that of the paper-based TOEFL and TOEFL cBT (computer-based TOEFL), tests not only reading, listening and writing, but it also has a new section-Speaking. This section includes independent and integrated communicative tasks, which can be very confusing for the non-English speaking people.
Well, what should your students expect from the new TOEFL iBT? What should they focus their attention on? The main thing here is to let them know that this new version will only do them good, since they will be more prepared to enter the English-speaking community.
Main features of TOEFL iBT *
1. TOEFL iBT evaluates equally both the ability to understand the information while listening and to express your own thoughts. Half of the score is for the Reading section, which tests your ability to understand reading information. The second half is built up of the scores obtained from the Speaking and Writing sections, i.e. the skills to express thoughts by means of the English language.
2. TOEFL iBT also evaluates combined skills. The Reading and Writing sections offer several questions in which the candidates have to read and/or listen to the passage and analyze it either in writing or orally. The following are the general modules to test the combined skills:
- read, listen, then speak in response to a question
- listen, then speak in response to a question
- read, listen, then write in response to a question
3. TOEFL iBT doesn't include a Structure section. The knowledge of grammar is evaluated while performing each of the four sections.
4. The iBT unlike other forms of the TOEFL allows note-taking throughout the entire test.
* You can find much information about TOEFL iBT features by downloading TOEFL_tips.pdf from the links below.
