Day 1 Thursday

Theme: Getting started; communicating with groups: Email, online discussion, and journaling

8:30 Introductions; overview of the week; questionnaire and individual objectives; digital photos.

Small group discussion about goals and individual topics from Action Plans - large group sharing

Email and online discussion: What you can do with YahooGroups. .
-Check your email. I've invited you to join the TechSem 2007 group. Click Join to join the group.
Remember that you can easily create a class on Nicenet for another type of online discussion.
9:30 Email for research and teaching - TESL-L, TESLCA-L. English teachers: Sign up for TESL-L (see the handout).

Journaling: Creating a blog with Blogger (www.blogger.com) - see sample at gabesian.blogspot.com and some student samples at http://www.fileden.com/files/10648/List%20of%20Students.htm. Think about ways that students can communicate with the wider world using a blog.
You can create audio journals with this, too. We'll be doing some podcasts later in the week.
Create a blog where you will describe your feelings and experiences. For your first post, talk about your expectations for what you will learn during the Tech Seminar.

Journaling with PowerPoint: use the template to write down your action plan (more advanced students can animate and embellish their shows). Add comments about what you did today.
Save your PowerPoint on your flash drive; make sure you Save As and put your name on the file.
Homework: Think about how you communicate with your students. Take some notes and be ready to discuss this tomorrow.

Day 2 Friday

Theme: Communicating with others

8:30 Debrief Day 1: What communication tools will you use when you go home, and what might you use in the future?

- Insert Comments (download a sample file to comment on)
- AutoSummarize (download a sample file to autosummarize; another sample)
- Synonyms, dictionary, translation
- Creating tables in Word (to save your web links tomorrow)

Go to groups.yahoo.com and sign in. Find your picture on Photos and save it (right-click and download). Save on your flash drive
10:00 PowerPoint journal - add comments for Day 2. Insert a picture that relates to your topic, either your photo or clip art.
Add clip art to Word, PowerPoint - http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/default.aspx?lc=en-us
Go to your blog. Add a posting about what you've learned the past two days.
Homework: Make a list of the reasons you use the Web, and another list with the reasons your students use the Web. Be ready to discuss this.

Choosing the right search engine: NoodleTools

Try different engines: Google, Kartoo, Teoma
Look for your home town, then for a topic of interest.

Add a comment on your blog about what you think the Web will do to and for teaching..
Homework: Think about the kind of exercise that you would like to create. What is its purpose? Be ready to share your ideas with your group.

Day 4 Tuesday

Theme: Creating exercises and podcasts/audio blogs

8:30 Debrief Day 3: What did you like? Why? What else do you need to do with the web pages to make them really useful?
8:45 Hot Potatoes to create material: matching, crossword, gap-fill exercises.
Save them on the Yahoo Group - make sure your name is on your exercise! Save a copy on your flash drive, too.
If you have time, try more of the sites on Internet Possibilities Day 3. Add good sites to your table in Word.

Audio blogs and podcasting: Blogger and Podomatic. You will need a microphone to create an audio blog or podcast. See a sample of what Aiden Yeh did with Podomotic at http://aidenyeh.podomatic.com/. You can see a different kind of podcast at http://eslpage.blog-city.com/ - it's a series of podcasts that help students learn about idioms.
10:00 PowerPoint journal - add comments for Day 4.
Add a posting to your blog about creating material for teaching, both on the computer and on paper.

Day 5 Wednesday

Theme: Creating web pages

8:30 Debrief Day 4: How can you or your students use what you created? What else do you need to do with your exercises to make them really useful?

Create a folder in My Documents with your name on it. At the end of today, put any material you want to share in that folder, and we'll copy it to put on the Mexico2007 website.
