Translation Sites

These free sites are useful in giving students and others some idea about the content of a web page. In many, you can copy and paste in information from a document, as well. Most of these do word-for-word translations, taking no account of grammar and idiomatic expressions. As a result, the output is far from what a human translator or even commercial translation software can provide. Still, it can offer enough information about the content to help learners use their background knowledge to make some sense of it.

English to and from a range of languages at Babelfish, including Spanish, Chinese, and Korean: http://babelfish.altavista.com/ . This is one of the oldest free translation sites.

English to and from Arabic: http://tarjim.ajeeb.com/ajeeb/default.asp?lang=1

English to Norwegian, Dutch and others that Babelfish does: http://www.freetranslation.com/web.htm

English to Russian, French, German, and Spanish: http://translation.paralink.com/url_mode/urlmode.asp

English to more than 20 languages: http://intertran3.tranexp.com/?type=url The languages are mostly European but also include Japanese and Turkish.
