ELI Learning Center Courses
Individualized Directed Learning
Students work in the Learning Center on the following: vocabulary
development; test-taking skills; TOEFL; individualized reading, writing,
and listening; speaking practice; and CALL (computer-assisted language
learning). Students have opportunities
for increased responsibility for goal setting and self-monitoring.
In this course students learn different ways to practice
English and develop computer skills. Students do word processing, data
base, and spreadsheet exercises.
This course requires a basic knowledge of computers,
i.e., ability to word process. Students explore CD-ROMs, Internet/Web
usage, graphics programs, some programming, and advanced information
searches.
In this course students learn about how
English sounds are made and the rhythm and intonation of English.
Students practice these sounds individually, in pairs, and in small
groups to improve their pronunciation. They also take advantage
of the many pronunciation tapes, videos, and computer programs the ELI
has to offer.
In this course students gain knowledge and skills to use
the Internet to find and communicate information.
