Overview
This is a great program for students to get a taste of international travel, learn some English, and experience a different way of looking
at the world.
Classes
We offer classes that prepare students to be out in the community
interacting
with people from the first day. In a typical class, students first
learn vocabulary and cultural information, practice speaking and
roleplaying, then go out into campus or the community and find
answers for an activity. They later come back to class and discuss what
they have learned and ask questions to learn more.
This format prepares students to sucessfully communicate in English
with native speakers and then reflect on the experience. Students learn
English, but also notice cultural issues.
Students usually keep a Culture Journal to write about their
experiences, and do a project and oral presentation about an aspect of
American culture of their choice.
Additional activities
Most programs include a weekend
homestay with an American family.
Bi-weekly conversant
groups
led by American students are also a regular
part of a Special Program. Many programs also include site visits that
reinforce ideas learned in the classroom. These can be to a museum, a
forest, downtown, a business, or even a restaurant.
Trips
Add a trip or two to make the program even more memorable! We can arrange day trips or overnight trips to many places in Oregon. Here are some examples of trips
students have enjoyed in the the past.
