Ministry of Education Workshop: Training the Trainers
February 23-27, 2003
Purposes of the workshop
To create and pilot a teacher training syllabus and methodology;
and to enhance the use of technology in the curriculum, enabling classroom
teachers to teach different skill areas more effectively and deeply with
the aid of computers so that they can better develop students' language abilities
through the aid of computers.
Syllabus
Day 1
Course business
Training techniques: Modeling best practices
1. Skill assessment – grouping participants
2. Lab management – modeling best practices
3. Expectations – additional readings feasible? Baseline
knowledge of participants?
4. Collaborative environment – dividing up responsibility

Overview of the software to be used
Accept or revise the syllabus for Week 2 as it stands now
Web creation tools; word-processing tools; need to move quickly to create
the workshop
Division into teams:
- Keyboarding and writing (freeware typing program, Word)
- Vocabulary and spelling; maybe dictionary use (freeware concordancer,
spelling program, Hot Potatoes; maybe Longman dictionary)
- Reading and maybe content resources (speed reading program, Hot
Potatoes, interactive readings; maybe Encarta)
- Role play/simulations for discussion and problem-solving (Pharaoh
and other shareware simulations; maybe an action maze if participants have
advanced web skills)
- Initial team work to plan who will do what for the next 4 days
– need to find at least one 2-page reading for each day; sketch out a lesson
plan for your day
- Sharing of lesson plans for comment and inspiration from each
other (with someone from each team taking notes); debrief and evaluation
Days 2-4
Course business as needed
Discussion of the reading (could be a reading that one of the groups has
found and wants comments about)
Quick look at a piece of software if it is something the group is unfamiliar
with
Team work – syllabus and materials development
Debrief the day; share what you have so far; what is needed for tomorrow?
Day 5
Course business
30-minute team presentations to the whole group, including the syllabus,
brief bit of the lesson, evaluation tool
Comments after each presentation – with someone from
the team taking notes
