EAMP Teachers - Washington D.C. Trip Itinerary - August 11 - 18, 2007

Saturday,  August 11

n       4:00 a.m.               Load Anthony’s Shuttle transporter in front of the GEM and leave

n       4:15 a.m.               Leave for Portland International Airport (PDX).  Bring snacks for the trip.

n       6:00 a.m.               Arrive at PDX, unload bags and check in for flight. 

n       7:50 a.m.               Leave PDX on Southwest 2156, stop in Chicago, 1:45 pm.  (Eat lunch at airport – per diem)

n       3:15 pm                 leave Chicago on Southwest 376

n       6:05 pm                 Arrive in Washington, Dulles Airport, gather bags and ride Super Shuttle to the hotel, bring cash for the driver.

n       8:30 pm*               *Find a restaurant that is still open or eat snacks in the game center at conference center.  (per diem)

 

Sunday, August 12

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       10:30 am               Meeting for daily activities and class time.  Discuss site visits, choose the best places.  Debrief Metro & Bus Maps.

n       11:30 pm               Mark goes for Metro rail and bus weekly passes.

n       11:30 -1 pm           Lunch at Conference Center or your choice (per diem)

n       9 – 5                      Rest and recuperate from travel.  Explore using bus, rail or taxi.  Use the free internet service in rec room downstairs.

n       5:30-7:30 pm         Dinner at Conference center or your choice (per diem).

n       7:30-8:30 pm*       Updates on Activities and class time – research the internet – using the internet to research sites we will visit.

 

Monday,  August 13

n       7:00-8:30 a.m.       Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       8:30 am                 Meet and take Metro Bus, Rail and *Taxis to TESOL Executive Offices, Alexandria, VA.

n       10 - 12                   Meet with TESOL Executive Officers.  Bring money to buy books if desired.                      

n       12:30 p.m              Lunch, Layla Lebanese Restaurant or your choice (per diem).

n       1:30-5                    Site-seeing Alexandria and taking the Metro bus and rail back to the conference center.

n       5-7 pm                   Dinner in hotel or your choice (per diem).

n       7:30-8 p.m.*          *Class debriefing of TESOL offices and Alexandria.  Prep for tomorrow's class sharing of community svc. activity.

Tuesday, August 14

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       9-10:30 am            Class: Sharing of community svc. activity and other American culture classroom activities. *Reserve room!

n       11-3:30                  Free time, exploring on your own.  *(Attend EAMP student class if possible.)

n       4:30-8:30               AMIDEAST Reception with Hors d'ouevre. (Reception time is 6-8 pm) 

n       9 pm                      Dinner on your own. (per diem)  **or eat before the reception – the food was enough at the reception.*

Wednesday, August 15

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       9:30                       Leave for Boat tour and tour of Mt. Vernon.

n       11 – 5:30               Tour of Mt. Vernon and Lunch on the estate.  *Don't forget to tour the main house.  *Create a scavenger hunt for the              

n                                    2.5 hours on the grounds.

n       5:30-7:30 p.m.*     Dinner at conference center. (use badge)* (not possible)  *Have dinner out as a group in Alexandria.  (per diem)

n       7:30-9:30 pm         Access student own country culture presentations.  Attend and debrief afterwards with students.

Thursday, August 16

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       9-10 am                 Class: Discussion of student culture presentations & best culture presentation prep. *Reserve room!

n       12 pm                    Leave 4h center for U.S. Capitol.

n       2 – 4:30 pm           U.S. Capitol Tour  *(prepare for 5 pm meal somewhere close – then walk the Mall)*

n       5 -7 pm                  Evening walk along the U.S. mall – memorials and monuments.

n       5:30-7:30 p.m.       Dinner at conference center. (use badge)  *not possible, not enough time.  *Have dinner out at Cheesecake Factory.

Friday, August 17

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       10-12:30 pm          Final debriefing of tour and D.C. activities.  *(attend Access Student debates? @ 11:30 am.)*

n       12:30                     Leave for So Others Might Eat (SOME) to see Volunteerism.  *Leave at 11:30 to get there for lunch crowd or wait till

n                                     12:30 to get one-on-one tour of the soup kitchen facility.

n       1:30 pm                 Nadia departs for airport.

n       5:30-7:30               Dinner at conference center. (use badge)

 

Saturday, August 18

n       7:30-9 a.m.            Breakfast at conference center. (use badge)

n       9 am (various)       Check out and take Super Shuttles to airport

n       10 am (various)     Check in luggage at airport (Mark's Flight leaves at 4 p.m.  Check your travel itinerary.)

n       10:45  pm (various)           Arrive home (eventually)

 

 

*** Please bring loose-fitting cool clothes because it gets hot and humid in Washington D.C., in the summer.  Also, bring a light jacket; there could be rain.  Bring money for food, shopping, some local transportation by subway.  You can use your ATM cards and carry no more than 100 dollars at any one time.  There haven't been any incidents of crime but we ask that the group to be cautious with carrying too much money.***

 

*Please clean up dirty dishes in the GEM.  Have all materials ready by the door for loading by the PAs. 

Please bring all your luggage.  And your airline tickets!!  The Hut Shuttle & D.C. Super Shuttle drivers will help with your bags.  Please consider paying a tip of $1 per bag that drivers have to handle.

 

Your rooms have been paid for by the English Access project. The room fee does NOT include phone service NOR movie service on the TV. You will also not be able to watch movies in your room (though you will have access to regular TV channels).

 

Local calls are .20 cents a minute (or more).  You will have to pay for any local calls you make at the front desk.  800, 877, 866 calling cards are free to use in your room.  Dial 8 + 800 + the number.  You may wish to make a call to friends or relatives using a phone card from Corvallis Rice & Spice.
