Current events at the ELI
Winter term 2008 has been an eventful term at the ELI. First of all, after 9 years of leadership of the ELI, Dr. Deborah Healey is stepping out of her position as Director to return to full-time teaching and teacher training at the ELI. Ms. Jane Averill, who has served in a number of capacities at the ELI, including Coordinator of Special Programs, has been appointed as the new Director, beginning April 1. We look forward to Jane’s leadership, and all of us at the ELI extend a heartfelt THANKS to Deborah for her advocacy and support of ELI students, staff and faculty.
The ELI has applied for accreditation with the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). Part of the accreditation process is a site visit, which will occur in late February. The results of the accreditation evaluation will be known in the fall.
We have 127 students from 23 countries this Winter term, including 14 students from Indonesia in the Indonesia English Language Study Program sponsored by the Institute of International Education and 5 Fulbright students - 3 from Chile, 1 from Benin and 1 from Senegal. We welcome ALL our new and continuing students – and look forward to hearing more from them and all of you once they move on from the ELI!
ELI Projects
Peace Scholarship Program
The ELI would like to invite you to contribute to our new Peace
Scholarship Program. This program gives ELI tuition scholarships
to enhance peace efforts by supporting students from areas of the
world that are experiencing conflict or students who wish to study
peace education. Donors will receive a special certificate of
thanks. Every donation, large or small, to the Peace Scholarship
Program will help. $2200 provides a full tuition scholarship.

how to contribute.
ELI Library Improvement Project
We are looking for contributions to refurnish and improve the
ELI Library in Snell Hall. It is a common practice in the US to
have a public listing of donors (if the donors want to be listed).
Contributors to the ELI Library will be listed in the ELI Library
as a Donor and receive a certificate of thanks. In addition,
contributors can choose to have their names on a shelf or chair
with a donation of $100. Want to do more? Please contact the ELI
Director. See
how to contribute.

Winter 2008 Question: When is Presidents' Day, and what is it for?
Answer: President's Day is on the 3rd Monday in February - this year, that's February 18th. Lincoln's Birthday (February 12) and Washington's Birthday (February 22) are often both celebrated on this day. People do not celebrate the current or recent President on President's Day, just famous ones from the past.
Summer 2007 Question: What is a marionberry?
Answer: It's a berry that was created from a blackberry (through
selective breeding) to be much bigger and without the thorny stems
of the common blackberry. It was developed in Marion County, Oregon
- and this is about the only place in the world where marionberries
are grown. It's also very tasty! Read more... |
