The English Language Institute is located in Corvallis, Oregon, a small university town in the western United States. Its 150-200 students per term come from around 40 different countries for small classes taught by English language teaching professionals.
The ELI intensive English program curriculum consists of 18-24 hours per week of reading/writing, listening/speaking, individualized directed learning, grammar, and other elective courses (such as TOEFL preparation). Our technology-rich Learning Center adds variety to language learning, and the Conversant Program is designed to make sure that students have the opportunity to meet Oregon State University students and local residents who can help them practice their English while learning about American culture.
We are on the quarter system, so Fall, Winter, and Spring terms are approximately 11 weeks each. Summer term is eight weeks, leaving a break to rest, go home, or tour Oregon and the US. See a current list of term dates and costs for more information.
The ELI works with Oregon State University on the Conditional Admissions program. Undergraduate students with TOEFL scores of at least 450 and graduate students with scores of at least 500 can be granted conditional admission to OSU. Full admission is granted to students who achieve 550 on the TOEFL or who successfully complete Level 6 courses at the ELI. For more information about OSU admissions, including deadlines and an application form, see the OSU Admissions page. Take a look at more information about the CAP program on the ELI Admissions page.
ELI students have access to all of Oregon State University's extensive Internet resources, including electronic mail and the World Wide Web. Students also are able to create their own World Wide Web home pages.
ELI students can stay in campus housing or off campus in apartments, co-operative housing, or other housing. For more information about university housing (dormitories and family housing), you can e-mail the OSU Housing Office at UHDS@orst.edu
You can check the OSU Housing Web pages at http://oregonstate.edu/uhds/. Unless you have a fast connection, you are advised to turn image loading off for best results.
Please note that the ELI does not arrange housing for regular program students; you will need to contact the Housing Office directly for that service. Fill out an online OSU Housing Information Request Form.
The ELI also offers Special Programs custom-designed for specific groups. We have a great deal of experience in language and culture, English for Business, and English for Science, as well as other specialized areas.
For teachers, the ELI shares its expertise in educational technology with Summer Technology Workshops. (See our Technology Tip of the Month for a small taste.)
