The
Division of Special Programs (DSP)
provides customized English language programs for groups of ten or more
students. In this type of program the ELI works closely with the group
sponsors (such as institutions, agencies, businesses, or foreign
governments) to provide specialized English instruction in support of
the students' academic or professional focus. The ELI can draw upon
numerous resources, including custom-designed curricula, materials, and
activities.
English
Language and American Culture Programs
These
custom-designed programs are arranged for groups to learn
English while exploring the beauty of Oregon. Classroom lessons focus
on cultural topics such
as Downtown Corvallis, County Fairs, Health Services, and
more. Students are introduced to useful vocabulary and
phrases in the classroom and then given tasks to complete on
field trips into the community and on excursions to scenic places in Oregon.

Teacher
Training Programs
Short-term intensive seminars for
teachers focus on content-based instruction, technology in
education, EFL/ESL
methodology and assessment or other areas of interest to the
participants. The institute has worked with teachers from
many areas of
the world, including Mexico, Pakistan, Tunisia, Japan, Cyprus and Egypt
in
recent years. We also worked with a group of teachers from
17 different countries - our most diverse group so far.
Pre-Academic
Training Programs
The ELI provides
courses for groups to help prepare international students
for success at academic institutions in the US. Courses help
students make a smooth transition into life at an US university by
introducing them to campus resources, refining language skills,
discussing cross-cultural issues, and preparing them for
tests such as the TOEFL and GRE.
Online
Training Programs
The ELI has
successfully operated an online writing course with Waseda University
Extension in Japan since 2003. In collaboration with OSU's Distance and
Continuing Education department, DSP will develop and implement courses
in other skill areas according to the sponsor's needs.
