economics major

The Department of Economics offers a traditional Economics Major and a Managerial Economics option. The requirements for the Economics Major are listed below, and those for the Managerial Economics option follow.

To receive a major in Economics you must complete a minimum of 55 credits as listed below.

  1. Principles:
    ECON 201 -- Introduction to Microeconomics (4 credits)
    ECON 202 -- Introduction to Macroeconomics (4 credits)
  2. Calculus:
    MATH 241-- Calculus For Management & Social Science (4 credits)
      OR
    MATH 251 -- Differential Calculus (4 credits)
  3. Microeconomic Theory
    ECON 311 -- Intermediate Microeconomic Theory I (4 credits)
    ECON 312 -- Intermediate Microeconomic Theory II (4 credits)
  4. Macroeconomic Theory
    ECON 315 -- Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory I (4 credits)
    ECON 316 – Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory II (4 credits)
  5. Statistics
    ST 351 -- Introduction to Statistical Methods (4 credits)
  6. Econometrics
    ECON 424 -- Introduction to Econometric Methods (4 credits)
  7. WIC Course
    ECON 428 -- Introduction to Economic Research (4 credits)
      OR
    ECON 463 – Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (4 credits)
  8. 15 additional hours, at least 4 of which must be in courses numbered 411 or higher, for a total of 55 credits. MATH 241 or 251 and STAT 351 count towards the 55 credit total.
  9. No more than 4 credits of self-study courses (ECON 401-406, 408-410) may be counted towards the 55 credit requirement.

In planning your program of study, we recommend that you take Econ 311, 312, 315 and 316 as early as possible. Be aware that not all classes are offered every term, and that Stat 351 must be taken before Econ 424. In addition, the following grade requirements must be satisfied.

Grade Requirements for the Major

  1. Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.00 or better in all Economics courses taken.
  2. Students must earn a grade of 2.0 or better in each upper division required course: ECON 311, ECON 312, ECON 315, ECON 316, ST 351, ECON 424, and ECON 428 or ECON 463.
  3. None of the 55 credits may be taken S/U.

College of Liberal Arts and University Requirements

In addition to the requirements for the major, the student must satisfy the following:

  1. All College of Liberal Arts requirements (15 credits). No Economics classes or Bac Core classes may be used to satisfy these requirements.
  2. All College of Liberal Arts requirements for either the B.A. or B.S. degree.
  3. All Bac Core requirements (48 credits). No Economics classes may be used for the Bac Core.
  4. Total credits of 180, at least 60 of which must be upper division (300 or 400 level).

managerial economics option

The Managerial Economics option also requires a minimum of 55 credit hours. Specific requirements are listed below.

  1. Principles:
    ECON 201 -- Introduction to Microeconomics (4 credits)
    ECON 202 -- Introduction to Macroeconomics (4 credits)
  2. Calculus:
    MATH 241-- Calculus For Management & Social Science (4 credits)
      OR
    MATH 251 -- Differential Calculus (4 credits)
  3. Microeconomic Theory
    ECON 311 -- Intermediate Microeconomic Theory I (4 credits)
  4. Macroeconomic Theory
    ECON 315 -- Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory I (4 credits)
  5. Statistics
    ST 351 -- Introduction to Statistical Methods (4 credits)
  6. Econometrics
    ECON 424 -- Introduction to Econometric Methods (4 credits)
  7. WIC Course
    ECON 428 -- Introduction to Economic Research (4 credits)
      OR
    ECON 463 – Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (4 credits)
  8. Managerial Economics
    ECON 462 -- Managerial Economics (4 credits)
    BA 215 -- Fundamentals of Accounting (4 credits)(or BA 211 or BA 213 wil be accepted for those who have completed the courses before declaring an economics major)
    AND
    Two courses (at least one must be ECON):
    BA 340 - Finance (4 credits)
    BA 347 - International Business (4 credits)
    BA 352 - Organizational Behavior (4 credits)
    BA 357 - Operations Management (4 credits)
    BA 390 - Marketing (4 credits)
    ECON 312 - Microeconomic Theory II (4 credits)
    ECON 330 - Money and Banking (4 credits)
    ECON 460 - Industrial Organization (4 credits)
    ECON 463 - Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (4 credits) (cannot use here if used for WIC)
  9. 7 additional credits of upper division ECON classes for a total of 55 credits.
  10. No more than 4 credits of self-study courses (ECON 401-406, 408-410) may be counted towards the 55 credit requirement.
