academic preparation for a graduate degree in economics

Admission decisions are based on many factors including the quality of the applicant's prior academic degree and record of accomplishment, preparation in the proposed field of study, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, general GRE scores, TOEFL scores if applicable, relevant work experience, and competition from other applicants.

An undergraduate major in economics is desirable but not required. However, students should prepare for graduate study in economics by completing courses in intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics. Students should also complete undergraduate courses in calculus (differentiation, integration and multivariate), statistics, econometrics, and linear algebra. The applicant must meet Oregon State University minimum admission requirements and have completed at least:

  • Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (ECON 311 and ECON 312, or equivalent)
  • Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory (ECON 315 and ECON 316, or equivalent)
  • Introduction to Econometrics (ECON 424 or equivalent)
  • Linear algebra, Differential, Integral and Multivariate calculus
