non-thesis master's degree in economics12

The non-thesis Master's Degree in Economics is only available to Ph.D. students who have successfully passed Ph.D. qualifying exams in macroeconomics and microeconomics. Otherwise students must pursue the thesis option for a Masters degree.

The student must file a Master's program which contains a minimum of 45 credits including the following:

  1. A minimum of 3 credits of ECON 501 (Research and Scholarship) OR 3 credits of ECON 506 (Project).
  2. Two approved economics field classes at the 500 or 600 level.
  3. At least one credit of ECON 507/607 (Faculty Seminar).

For the Non-Thesis Master's Degree the committee must consist of three faculty members with at least one graduate faculty member from the Department of Economics. Committee membership and the program of study must be approved by the student's committee and by the Chair of the department.

The student must schedule a final defense for the non-thesis Master's degree. This defense can be concurrent with a student's oral preliminary exam for the doctorate but not with the final doctoral exam.
