The Doctor of Philosophy degree is designed to prepare students for careers in academic institutions, government, and industry as research economists. Students are expected to complete at least three years of full-time graduate work beyond the Bachelor's degree. Doctoral candidates must pass comprehensive examinations in macroeconomic and microeconomic theory, complete at least two fields, and complete a Ph.D. dissertation.

A Non-thesis Master's Degree in Economics is available to Ph.D. students who have successfully passed all comprehensive examinations and met the requirements.

6 Credits earned at recognized graduate schools may be transferred with the approval of the Graduate Committee. Graduate courses in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and the student's major field of specialization are frequently repeated at Oregon State University.

7 Students sign up once per year for one credit of ECON 607 in the Fall, automatically receive an "incomplete" in Fall, and a grade in Spring term.
