advising and required meetings for the master's degree

All new graduate students will be advised by the Graduate Director until the student's formal graduate committee is formed. A M.A./M.S. student is required to form an advisory committee and file a program of study with the Graduate School before completing 18 graduate credits.

The student should consult with the faculty adviser, choose a major field, and identify a major professor. The student, in consultation with the major professor, should then identify two additional faculty members to form the advisory committee. At least one Master's advisory committee member must be a graduate faculty member from the Department of Economics. Advisory committee membership must be approved by the Chair of the department.

The Department of Economics requires Master's students to have a meeting with their advisory committee to discuss the program of study. The program of study must be approved by the Chair of the department.

Master's students must also have a formal final defense meeting. This meeting must include all advisory committee members plus a Graduate Committee member appointed to represent the Graduate School. The Graduate School maintains a list of faculty eligible to serve as a Graduate School Representative for the defense and it is the student's responsibility to identify a Graduate School Representative.

All Master's students are required to write a Master's Thesis to meet the requirements for a M.A/M.S. degree. The Master's thesis must conform to all requirements listed in the Graduate School Online Thesis Guide. The Graduate School also provides a Guide to Success for graduate students.
