graduate life at oregon state universityOregon State University (OSU) is one of only two American universities to hold the Land-, Sea-, Sun-, and Space-Grant designations and is the only Oregon institution recognized for its "very high research activity" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Established in the 1850s, current enrollment is approximately 19,000 students, including approximately 3,500 graduate students. OSU prides itself in offering the best of both worlds: the personal atmosphere of a liberal arts college and the intellectual distinction of a true research university. Economics' graduate students (Graduate Student Representation) at OSU have access to a departmental computing lab with 15 personal computers including a variety of up-to-date software for word processing, spreadsheets, statistics, mathematics, and econometrics. The University's Valley Library holds more than 1.3 million volumes as well as all of the major journals in economics and related fields. The Economics Department, in cooperation with the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department, also operates a small library, The Emery Castle Reading Room, containing leading journals in economics. OSU is located in Corvallis, a city of about 53,000 permanent residents. It is 80 miles south of metropolitan Portland, 50 miles east of the Pacific coast, and 50 miles west of the Cascade Mountains. The city is bordered by forested hills and skyline ridges in a region that offers outstanding recreational, athletic, and cultural opportunities. Weather in Corvallis is mild throughout the year. |
