Garlic Seed

COARC garlic trials seedingGarlic is reproduced vegetatively by breaking the mature garlic bulbs apart and planting individual cloves. Garlic does not normally produce viable seed, so is unable to reproduce like most other crops. The garlic crop grown in central Oregon is planted in California for use in fresh market or processed products. A portion of the crop is brought back to central Oregon for the next year’s crop. The “seed garlic” grown in more northerly, cooler climates like central Oregon creates more vigorous production when planted in California than if the seed garlic were produced there.
