Marvin D. Butler

Marv received a B.A. and M.A. in Biology at Pacific Union College in the Napa Valley of California. After 10 years of teaching secondary and elementary in Medford, Oregon and Helena, Montana, he attended Utah State University and earned an M.S. in Plant Science.

Following school in 1984 he accepted a job as Agricultural Extension Agent with the University of Arizona. He was located at Yuma and was responsible for working with the fresh vegetable industry, citrus, table grapes, melons, urban horticulture and the Master Gardener program. Working with the high tech, cutting edge produce industry and fruit production in the southwest desert provided a challenging and rewarding experience.

In 1991 Marv accepted an Extension Crop Scientist position in a three county area of central Oregon. His area of focus was vegetable seed, grass seed and peppermint. These specialty crops are grown by progressive growers and a seed industry located in the Madras area, east of the Cascade Mountains and north of Bend. This high desert, irrigated agricultural production area is ideal for high quality seed, particularly hybrid carrots.

In 2005 Marv became Superintendent of the Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center and County Director for the Jefferson County Extension office. He currently has 0.5 FTE administrative responsibilities, with the remainder in agricultural research and Extension.

Marv is currently on the Western Society of Weed Science Board of Directors. Locally he is a member of the Madras/Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He sees himself as an opportunist looking for ways to bring the expertise and resources of Oregon State University to the local community.

Marv and Linda have two children, Jeb and Jenny, who are married with two children each - Rebekah, Levi, Dillon and Sydney. Marv and Linda enjoy tandem kayaking on the Cascade Lakes and the Deschutes River. In addition, Marv enjoys windsurfing in the Columbia River gorge, snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor and the recent challenge of learning the game of golf. Their favorite getaway is to the island of Kauai.
