Demonstration Garden

COARC Demonstration GardenThe COARC demonstration garden was created at the Madras site in 2008 and will be fully functional in 2010. The objective is to provide an interface with the local community at large, in addition to the agricultural community we have traditionally provided with research-based information.

The garden provides a setting to learn about landscape, fruit and vegetable gardening, and is designed for both adults and students. Adults will learn what species or variety of landscape plants, fruits, small fruits and vegetables do well in central Oregon. Learning centers are being incorporated for students to learn why pollinators are important to our vegetable seed crops, invasive species that are having a negative effect on our central Oregon environment, and why composting and organic matter is important to soil health.

Current Status-Spring 2010:  The final grouping of landscape plants has been ordered and will be planted this spring.  We have also ordered several types of fruit trees, raspberries and strawberries to demonstrate choices that have been successful in central Oregon.  The grapes and vegetable portion of the garden will be the final addition scheduled for the spring of 2011.
