The Oregon Student Assistance Commission has a list of scholarships for Oregon
residents, and they use one application for all of them. Applications are
available in the Financial Aid Office and on their web site at
www.ossc.state.or.us Deadline: March 1.
Following are a sample of their scholarships:
• The Ford Opportunity Scholarship for single-parent heads of household. A
3.00+ GPA or a counselor recommendation is required. College counselors who
wish to submit a recommendation for a student should call 1 (800) 452-8807 ext.
7388.
• The Ford ReStart Program Scholarship, for students 26 years of age or more
with limited college experience.
• Laurence R. Foster - for students in Public Health
• James Carlson Scholarship - for Oregon residents enrolled in a program
leading to a teaching certificate.
• Howard Vollum American Indian - residents of Multnomah, Clackamas or
Washington Counties or Clark County, Washington who meet the American Indian
eligibility criteria described in the rules for this scholarship program.
Student must be studying in the fields of science, computer science,
engineering or mathematics.
Oregon PTA Teacher Education
Four $250 scholarships. Applicants must be planning to pursue a career in
teaching at the elementary and secondary school level. Write to: Oregon
Congress of Parents and Teachers, 531 SE 14th, Portland, OR 97214. Previous
deadlines have been early March.
Asian American Foundation of Oregon. Three scholarships of $350 each are
offered through the Asian American Foundation of Oregon. A fourth scholarship
of $350, the Smith Family Bookstore Scholarship, is also offered through the
Foundation. Previous deadlines were in April. For more information, email

Asian Reporter Scholarship. Three scholarships are awarded, ranging from
$500-$1000, to students of Asian descent from Washington or Oregon.
Applications will be available on their website in February:
www.asianreporter.com. Deadline will be in April or early May.
HMCC Scholarship. This scholarship provides support for Hispanics beginning or
continuing their higher education, who reside in Oregon or SW Washington. 2.75+
gpa required. Students can download an application from the website:
www.HMCCoregon.com. Contact HMCC Scholarship Committee, c/o Ornelas
Enterprises, 7275 NW Evergreen Pkway #100, Hillsboro, OR 97124. Deadline:
February 28.
Oregon Native American Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship
will be awarded to undergraduates of Native American ancestry who are able to
attend an awards ceremony on August 28, 2002. For application information

The OHSU Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs has researched and
compiled available state and national scholarships for minority students who are
interested or currently studying in the health and science fields. They have
over 90 scholarships information and have placed them on their website at
www.ohsu.edu/diversity.
