URSA Engage Program 2013
Position Descriptions for Students to Apply For

Faculty Name & Department/School:

Dr. Victor L. Hsu, Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics

Research Project Title:

Characterizing the DNA-binding protein from φX174

Project Overview:

The DNA-condensing protein from φX174 is responsible for packaging the DNA genome into the viral capsid to form infectious phage. Using biophysical techniques, the binding of this small protein to DNA samples will be investigated and characterized. These results will be used to further understand the mechanism of DNA-binding and condensation.

What skills will students obtain in this project?

Learn how to prepare protein and DNA samples
Perform spectroscopic titration experiments
Learn how to analyze and interpret spectroscopic data

Student research tasks:

Perform spectroscopic experiments
Data analysis and interpretation
Design experiments

Period of work - Spring and Fall

Number of hours per week expected of student:    4-8
