Research Project Title: Sustainable Manufacturing Assessment Tool Development
Research within the Industrial Sustainability Laboratory (School of MIME) has focused on developing a sustainable manufacturing assessment method and tool to quantify economic, environmental, and social metrics in aircraft component manufacturing and assembly. The project has culminated in the development of an MS Excel-based tool to assist decision makers in sustainable manufacturing assessment. An undergraduate researcher will assist in ongoing work, which is further developing the method and tool by improving the quality of the supporting data, increasing the number of manufacturing processes modeled, incorporating assembly processes, and adding a Visual Basic overlay (graphical user interface).
What skills will students obtain in this project?
Students will learn MS Excel, Visual Basic programming, and key concepts of sustainable design and manufacturing.
Student research tasks:
The undergraduate researcher will assist graduate students with the development of the sustainability assessment tool, including data gathering/entry in MS Excel and Visual Basic programming.
Period of work - Spring ONLY
Number of hours per week expected of student: 8-10
