Position Descriptions for Students to Apply For
Faculty Name & Department/School: Dr. Hilary Boudet, Sociology, School of Public Policy
Research Project Title: Climate Change, Extreme Weather and Action: A Cross-Case Comparison of Community Reactions to Extreme Weather Events
The scientific community largely concurs that a link exists between climate change and the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Moreover, scholars and activists alike contend that extreme weather events may provide an important opportunity for changing public attitudes and behavior toward climate change. However, the question remains: if these types of extreme weather events provide “teachable moments” about climate change, are we learning anything? By undertaking a comparative analysis of community response to 33 recent extreme weather events, we will seek to understand when and how communities undertake significant climate-related actions following an extreme weather event.
What skills will students obtain in this project?
Students will gain skills and expertise in social science research methods and data collection and analysis, including case selection, random sampling and content analysis and coding. Highly motivated students who show promising research potential may be allowed to visit case locations and conduct interviews with relevant stakeholders.
Student research tasks:
Students will assist with case selection of relevant communities and collection and content analysis of newspaper articles surrounding weather event. Excel will be used for content analysis, so familiarity with this tool is a plus.
