My career in the Army began when I enlisted in the Infantry in June 1978. I attended Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. I was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington where I served for four years, reaching the rank of Sergeant (E-5). After completing my enlistment service I registered at University of Guam and enrolled in the ROTC program. In May 1985 I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and branched in the Military Police Corps.

I served as an MP Reserve Officer for ten years in California and Oregon. In 1995 I attended the Civil Affairs Officer Advanced Course and was branch transferred to Civil Affairs. As a Civil Affairs Officer, I have deployed in support of Operation Joint Guard (Sarajevo, Bosnia), Operation Pacific Haven (Guam), and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan 2004). I have also participated in exercises in the Pacific to areas such as Palau, Samoa, Thailand, and Japan.
